Full review: If you’ve been avoiding going to a yoga class out of embarrassment of being a first-timer and not knowing the poses, this DVD will be your new secret weapon. Carter helps you develop an understanding of basic postures, ensuring you’ll get the most of your practice. If you’re an absolute beginner, start with the “Connect” sequence. First, Carter takes you through a mat exercise that develops body awareness and avoid injuries. Then, you’ll move through a simple, 20-minute mini flow that links basic poses like Child’s Pose and Cobra. In the second section, “Energize,” you’ll flow through a 20-minute sequence at a quicker pace, warming up the body, and working on building strength and flexibility. You’ll tackle more intermediate strength-building poses such as Bridge, as well as assisted stretches like Bound Angle to help loosen your hip and groin muscles (which feels great after sitting at a desk all day). “Strengthen” is the final 20-minute section, and it builds upon the poses you’ve learned in the other segments. In this flow, you’ll move through poses designed to engage and strengthen your core. To slim and strengthen your waist, Carter will make you hold side plank until your muscles quiver! We hated it—but loved it at the same time. To get the most out of this DVD, play each segment back-to-back, or just pick one if you’re crunched for time. At the end of each of the three sections, there will be a pause, so you can continue to the next section or, if this is the only practice you’re performing, Carter will guide you through a short savasana. Make sure that you don’t skip this yogi cool-down which gives your body time to absorb the benefits of the practice you just completed. Available at amazon.com ($14.98).
